Dental implants are a fantastic way to restore a smile back to its dazzling best and the loss of a tooth may often lead to a search for a dental implant specialist.
Finding a dental implant specialist may be easier than you thought as what you actually need in this situation is an experienced dentist.
In actual fact there is no such thing as dental implant specialist, instead all dentists train to a high standard allowing them to carry out a wide range of dental work.
The difference emerges when a dentist has field of special interest, such as dental implants.
Do I need a dental implant specialist?
Your dentist will always be your first port of call whatever dental problem it is that you are facing. They will be able to talk to you about your dental issues and advise you on the best course of treatment.
A dental implant may be suggested if:
- You have had a tooth knocked out
- You are missing teeth
- Significant restructuring of your teeth is required
How do dental implants work?
The work to insert a dental implant can be complicated, which is why some patients may believe they need a dental implant specialist.
Initially a screw is inserted into the bone, which will hold an abutment in place. A crown is then placed over this to complete the implant.
Carefully colour-matched the implant will appear as a natural tooth when completed.
If there is not enough bone mass to support the implant it may be that your dentist has to perform a bone graft.
If you do need a dental implant and your dentist is trained to insert implants they may carry out the work, otherwise you will be referred to a dentist who has completed additional training and has experience in fitting dental implants.
Ask your dentist for advice on implants
As there is no such position as a dental implant specialist, firms should not advertise this. Instead what you are looking for is a dentist who specialises in fitting implants. It is quite possible that there is a dentist at your practice who specialises in implants, otherwise your dentist will refer you to a qualified practitioner.
