Why Choose Dental Implants?

If you have lost a tooth or are undergoing work to realign your teeth you may need to consider having a replacement tooth fitted, one of the options being dental implants.

Due to their ability to fit seamlessly into the mouth dental implants have become a hugely popular choice with dental patients.

While there are other options that you may want to – or possibly need to – consider, dental implants are very often the number one choice to replace lost teeth.

Preserving a natural smile is important to dentists and patients alike and while dental implants are an artificial addition, the construction allows them to become a fully working and natural-looking part of the mouth.

Why would I need dental implants?

Dental implants are replacement teeth, so in the event that you have had a tooth knocked out or extracted due to a problem such as serious decay a dental implant will fill the gap that has been left.

Teeth can also be lost through severe cases of gum disease (periodontitis). When the periodontitis is no longer active, there is a possibility that dental implants can be used to restructure the mouth.

Patients who have struggled with poor alignment, missing teeth or still have baby teeth as an adult can benefit from dental implants to restructure the mouth and fill out any gaps.

Why choose dental implants?

Unlike other tooth replacement solutions dental implants are added in such a way that they become a working part of the mouth helping to improve function as well as appearance.

To this end a titanium screw is inserted into the jaw bone, which will eventually hold any dental implants in place. The screw is left to fuse with the surrounding bone to bring stability to the replacement tooth.

An abutment is placed onto the top of the screw to hold a crown in place. This crown is the part of dental implants that is seen and is carefully colour matched to the surrounding teeth to achieve a natural finish.

Other forms of replacement teeth include dentures and bridges. Dentures sit on the gums and are either moulded to stay in place or attached to other teeth.

A bridge is fixed into the mouth and is secured by being attached to the teeth either side of the gap. This will also be colour-matched to achieve a natural looking finish.
