Sedation dentistry is suitable for more than just nervous patients

The use of sedation in dentistry is transforming the way we provide care. A relaxed patient is a happy patient, and also much easier to treat. Whether you are nervous about your treatment or simply want to make a longer treatment feel much quicker, sedation dentistry could be ideal for you.

With sedation dentistry, you won’t be put to sleep, but you will feel more relaxed. You will be able to respond to prompts and might feel like you could doze off while your treatment is happening. The sedation takes around 6-24 hours to completely wear off, so you will need someone to accompany you to the dental practice and take you home afterwards. You won’t be able to drive yourself home.

The benefits of sedation dentistry

  • Feel more relaxed
  • Overcome dental anxiety
  • Ideal for long treatments
  • Effects wear off quickly

What kind of sedation do we offer?

At Bhandal Dental Practice, we offer IV conscious sedation and inhalation sedation. IV dental sedation is when the sedation drug is administered by an IV cannula, directly into the vein. This allows the sedation drug to work quickly, and your dentist will only need to give the required amount of sedation medication to remain effective. The patient will remain conscious and responsive throughout the treatment, but they are in a twilight state.

We'll ask you questions about your health and make sure you are a suitable candidate. We will ask you to nominate your escort.

3
Pay Your Deposit

We require a £50 deposit to book your dental sedation appointment. You will then pay £45 plus the price of your treatment.

4
Preparing For Treatment

Your treatment will typically last 1-2 hours. An IV cannula will be placed and your vitals are monitored throughout the appointment.

We'll wait until you are sufficiently sedated before the treatment begins. You should feel relaxed and at-ease throughout.

6

You will be required to recover under the supervision of the sedation dentist or nurse. Your escort can then collect you and take you home.

Frequently asked questions

How can we help?

Oral conscious sedation typically lasts for around four to six hours. This means that, even though you may not remember much about your appointment, you will be able to cooperate with us and follow our instructions.

The most common side effect of sedation is drowsiness. You may also have a dry mouth, feel nauseous, or have a headache after your procedure. These side effects will go away once the sedation wears off.

Most people who have a fear of dentists or need to have a lengthy procedure done can receive sedation dentistry. We will go over your health history and current medications to determine if sedation is right for you.

During your initial consultation, you will meet the dentist who will be performing the sedation. They will carry out the following checks:

• Medical history
• Social history
• Blood pressure
• Oxygen saturation
• Height and weight
• Dental anxiety questionnaire
• Assessment of the treatment required

Possible risks include over-sedating you; this is avoided by giving small amounts of the drug at a time, whilst monitoring your level of responsiveness. We keep a stock of the reversal drug, which works imminently, should it be required. Other risks include allergic reactions, however, these are very rare.

  • Just had a fantastic craftsmanship done by Dorsa @Bhandal Dental practice on my front tooth. Excellent work and attitude. I get overly nervous at dentists. But i think this was the first time ever I actually got calmed down and did not rip the arms of the chair. Thank you, Dorsa, much appreciated.

  • Dorsa was fabulous, due to poor experiences with a different surgery in the past, I am utterly terrified of the dentist. However Dorsa put me at ease and constantly checked how I was feeling, I underwent NHS and cosmetic treatment and the results brought on happy tears, my teeth have never looked or felt so good. Thank you for giving me my smile back.

  • Don't usually see this dentist (Dorsa) My usual one Luckie was not available, I was having deep filling and she kept me at ease, explained everything she was doing and was so gentle that I didn't even feel the needle for when she froze my mouth. Would definitely want to see her again. Thank you.
